Vitamin Q is for quiet.
I require quite a bit of Q.
The noisiness of the world tends to frazzle me. So either at home or when I take my walks in the woods, I get replenished and restored.
This past Sunday I watched a piece on the CBS Sunday Morning News about an acoustic ecologist, Gordon Hempton, and how he spent his life pursuing true quiet in nature. Needless to say, in many parts of the world, certain places have become less quiet.
He records silence in nature. But silence isn’t quiet, necessarily. It is the symphony of birds, frogs, crickets and other inhabitants of the wild.
A tree frog chorus, a bird song, soothing rainfall, or rustling of leaves….nature gives us sound therapy and vitamin q.
I am curious. What is your favorite sound in nature?
I am torn. I love the sound of a babbling brook but I also get pleasantly hypnotized by ocean waves. I consider it a gift to hear a shy wood thrush singing from the trees.
In this news story, the sound ecologist suggests walking in the woods and only listening to the sound of your footsteps.
I will do that the next time I take a stroll. Considering our weather today, however, I may have to resort to listening to the steady sound of rainfall. But I am not complaining!
One last thought as we wrap up April and our celebration of Earth Day month…..
Gaylord Nelson, the Earth Day founder, said, “There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be more.”
I would like to add… and where quiet is louder than every day noise.
Gordon Hempton says we save what we love. So if we can fall back in love with our planet, we will save the earth.
Here is a link to the episode on CBS. It is well worth watching.
Make every day Earth Day!
