We love taking winter trips to sunny places. Inevitably, we eat well and sometimes too well.
When I return home from vacation I crave healthy foods and a simple detox.
Here are a few of my simple post trip detox foods:
Garlic: did you know it is a natural antibiotic and an antiviral? Add it cooked or raw to soups and veggies and dips and as a sandwich spread.
Ginger: it is a refreshing anti inflammatory and immune booster. It provides gastrointestinal relief! I love making ginger and honey tea. Try grating it on cooked carrots.
Apples: I believe in the old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”!
Miso: I make a simple soup with this fermented soy paste. Nothing can heal your gut better than fermented foods. They are full of probiotics and antioxidants. Add greens or veggies or drink plain. *Remember that miso should be added to warm water, not boiling. The boiling water can deactivate the probiotic elements.
Smoothies: what can I say, they are my daily liquid vitamins. I add greens and fruit and whatever veggies I have on hand and even a dash of Turmeric. Add an avocado for healthy fats.
Lemons: the simplest of detoxes. They alkalize your system, help flush out toxins, aid digestion, and are a rich source of vitamin C. Add to warm water and drink every morning.
Try these simple suggestions after your travels. And if a trip is not in your forecast, they will always help you weather the winter well!
I could sure use a detox after a winter cold. Miso soup sounds like a great dinner option!
Good idea for dinner. It will help with your cold too. Put some chu chu in it! 🙂
Feel better!
Great suggestions! I have read recently that to get the full benefits of garlic, you should mince, chop, etc. and let it sit for 10 minutes before subjecting it to heat. Have you heard that?
Yes,I have heard this too. I try, but for the sake of time it doesn’t always work! Garlic is so potent and I am sure you still get some benefits anyway.
